Pipe Locating
We are being asked more and more to trace and find direction of underground pipe work.
We have a number of ways of doing this which have proved highly successful for our clients
Sonar tracing
This system is used on drainage systems and involves a Sonde which is either connected to a Camera, robot crawler, or rods. The Sonde sends a signal to the above ground receiver unit and operator this tells us the depth, direction, and location of the drain at any point. Although not 100% accurate when combined with our other methods provides a back up.
Divining / Dowsing
We strongly believe in this method of tracing all manner of pipe work and some cables too!
We generally use this method in conjunction with our high spec technical equipment….and guess what? The Dowsing works the best
Amoung many Found pipes;
For Pub / Restaurant chain M&B
Rising pumped sewer 100mm H.D.P.E in Exeter, this pipe is 1.5miles long and runs up and down hills across the main Exeter road, to exit in the next village green! (See pigging page for further details) no one new where this was before!
For the N.H.S
Pumped main running through St Leonards Forrest, Bournemouth. This pipe work was not on any plans! No one could remember where it ran, what depth, or to where it entered the main sewer! We traced the line through thick forest over a distance of 1.3miles! And found a hidden chamber prior to the main sewer! The area is covered with old Second World War pipe work when the area was a base. Many hours had been wasted by our client trying to find it.
Finding Water Board pipes
‘Surely the Water Board will have records and plans for where our pipes are???’
No, No, and No! …….They have records for their water mains…though this isn’t the case in some instances! But they don’t keep records of private supplies (this means from their meter or stop cock)….And No the Council don’t either!
We get asked this question all the time and people are dumbfounded when we explain this to them!
Finding private water supplies is a key part of our business, and we are very good at it!! For good reason our client have usually called us out to attend to a burst water main or their main is leaking. We then have to locate/ excavate down onto and repair/ or replace the main.
