Septic Tanks
Here at Keens we supply, install, repair and maintain septic tanks in Dorset and Hampshire.
Septic tanks have been around in the United Kingdom for hundreds of years. Their construction somewhat varies from place to place, but in general, a hole is excavated by hand or by a digger, and then a large chamber is constructed by bricks and mortar. Many old wells have been converted into septic tanks. In most cases the septic tank is designed rectangular in shape, and the inside of the septic tank is lined with bitumen to ensure it is water tight. Septic tanks can have a single chamber or two to three chambers inside the tank. The chambers serve to separate the solids (sludge) from the liquid sewage effluent.
Septic tank pollution, odors and smells
A healthy septic tank should not smell and should not be the source of pollution. If your septic tank is emitting a foul odor, or discharging waste it is in need of attention. Normally the discharge would be into a soak away.
The septic tank or tanks contains raw sewage and are designed to retain coarse waste only.
Septic tanks should not be the source of any pollution and should be registered with the Environment Agency. We can help with registration should you be concerned.
